Ok, you got your soldering iron and nothing is going to hold you back, but you have no clue where to start or what to build. There were others before you with the same questions... read them first.

This is my first mod and i'd like to bypass the tone stack on a 2012 big muff reissue. Ive found a site that as a schematic of the mod, and i think i get it, but i do have a few questions:
-I have sn50pb50 solder, is that ok?
-Ive opened the pedal, but i cant undo the circuit board....(yes i know, should be easy). Anyway, should i get a really thin wrench to acces the nuts under the plastic knobs on top the pedal? Or should I just pullout the plastic knobs? Ive tried to pullout, and...
I have a clone PCB from Pigeonfx ready to be wired up but I'm not sure where to put ground, input, +v wires etc.
I haver looked at any images I can find on the net and tried to work out what's needed but there are so many variations I can't quite work out what's going on. I want to wire it up with true bypass with an led but I'm not putting in a power switch.
Any assistance would be really appreciated. Here is a diagram of the pcb with numbers relating to points where wires are seen coming...
I recently finished breadboarding/perfboarding/boxing my first pedal and wanted to clarifying something very basic before moving on:
If a signal passes by a few components in a schematic, when translating the schematic to a board, does the space/order of those components matter? Or can they be soldered together in a single point, or even reversed?
If the question isn't clear, a couple of examples where I ran into this type of question:
1. A schematic shows that the output signal comes out of...
Hi guys, no idea if this is the right place to post this.
Basically i ordered a DIY fuzz factory clone kit from ebay thinking it would be great to build my own fuzz, i love fuzz factories so i thought why not.
The problem is, i cannot for the life of me get it to do anything ! (i get a lower volume guitar sound coming through to my amp,
even on distortion channel there is no or little distortion.)
Its only at board stage at the moment and in testing only the volume and gate pots seem to...
Hey, is this a resistor? It has 1000h (or possibly m) printed on the side and reads 47.6k ohm. There is another on the board that has 150h/m and is rated at 325kohm.
Newbie question. I'm wiring up an UV colored LED to a pedal that didn't come with one. As far as I can tell my wiring is fine. I have a 3.3k in line between the cathode of the LED and voltage. Put the battery in, clicked the stomp, and the LED lit. Clicked it off after a second, then back on, and after about a second the LED changed to a kind of bright purple and won't come back on. Do I need to bother to check my wiring to see if something just came loose, or is this LED toast and it's back to...
I want to build a footswitch with 2 LEDs for the Reverb and Tremolo effects of my Vox ac15, as the current one I got (a no name one) doesn't have LEDS, which is not very useful when I want to know if reverb is on or off, as an example. I precise that I'm also re-housing the wiring in a smaller box to reduce the space it takes on my pedalboard.
The footswith will have one LED per effect to check if it is on or off, and normally these LEDs will be powered...
I am new to the forums here and a total noob as far as pedal mods are concerned. However, I have worked with a soldering iron before... What wattage iron do I need to perform mods on boss pedals, digitech pedals, and little crappy crate combo amps and such?
Radio shack has like 12 soldering irons to choose from and of course the employees are no help at all. I am going to attempt a deizel vh4 mod on my metal zone, but I'd rather not fry the board. Any help would be appreciated,...
Hi guys im new here.
Firstly i just did blueclipper from tonepad with breadboard without on off switch.
My problem is that i cant get any effect. But it gives clean tone. I checked circuit maybe a houndres times. I couldn't find any problem. Is it beacuse switch ? :?: :?:
Trace cuts can be a bit tricky when you are using veroboard as the cuts are made to the reverse of the board so are effectively mirrored to what is shown on the layout. To make it a bit easier try this method
1. Mark component side positions of trace cuts with a thin marker or felt tip pen (Try to get the pen tip right into the hole so it marks the sides as well). This will correspond exactly to the layout and will also give you a reference point for placing other components.
I'm brand new 2 the world of diy stomp boxes.I don't plan on being a pedal builder I just want 2 design some circuit boards 4 mods 4 my own personal use.I have a guy who can do my building 4 me I've done research on diodes, capacitors, resistors, potentiometer and op amps.I'm pretty sure I understand how they all work but I can't seem 2 figure how they relate 2 pedal design.I'm not trying 2 reinvent the wheel I'd simply like 2 have some pedals I can call my own.Can anyone give me some direction?
I just put together my first build. Well, I put together a BYOC Confidence Boost that worked. Anyways, this is a Fuzz Face circuit from Madbean.
I wired it up to test it but it just made noise. I know they say rock it before you box it but I just dropped it in the box and hand-tightened the pots, jacks, and footswitch in, as I was assuming it may be a ground issue without the metal enclosure (I do not have a testing rig as of yet but plan to purchase or build one). Inside the enclosure, the...
I'm trying to build a Tremulus Lune from commonsound/4ms, and the parts list calls for a 7809 voltage regulator. From the pictures it looks like one of those half cylinder transistors with the three pins in a triangle form. Problem is on Mouser the only 7809 available is one of the straight line box-type so I'm not sure it's the right one.
I'm doing some of my part sourcing on Pedal Parts Plus, and the only Voltage Regulator they carry is a MC78LO5ACP
Is this a lifted trace (the brown spot) or does 'lifted trace' mean the actual green film coming off the board?
Hi, Im new to the forum, and soldering on PCBs. Is this what lifted trace means, or do I just need to use different solder --(with flux in it?)-- that will stick to the board again? I was using regular electrical 60/40 solder with an adjustable iron @ about 35 watts. Instead of solder flowing around the lead, it started coming off. When I tried to re-form a pool/pad of solder, it...
Hello i making a TubeScreamer TS808 clone.
In the original schematic they use 2 0.22uF Tantalum capacitors, but i don't have them, so i replace with 0.22uF Mylar capacitors. The result is when i turn the ton pot up, i get noise and loud hiss.
Can i replace the 0.22uF Tantalum with 1uF Tantalum then change the value of some resistors to make the tone pot work ?This is the original schematic of tone part and my modified version .I not tested it yet because i have to order parts to build it.Can...
I am building my first project, a Fuzz Face variant. I have soldered the resistors in only so far and have been checking resistance of each one as I go. The R1 and R2 read within the tolerance on my DMM, but when I got to R3 things went awry somehow.
I should mention that I had just finished a Red Bull, so my hands were shakier than normal and I should have waited for that to subside. The problem began when I accidentally soldered one of the holes for R3. I got the resistor in there and...
I am trying to build the hemmo/christian’s ultra simple bazz fuss circuit as suggested by Beavis Audio as a starter project. It asks for a 10k 1/4watt resister. On a whim I had previously bought some 10k 1/2 watt resisters. Can I use the 1/2 watt resisters? Are they like capacitors in that a higher amount than recommended is ok but a lower amount is not?
Hi there, I am an utter noob. I have a couple of projects in the mail (byoc & madbean board + parts) but was hoping to get some help on a prebuilt pedal (not by me). I have a SHO clone and the input has gone finicky on me. It seems like something is slightly loose, as I can nudge it a little and the sound will come back or go away. Like I said, I'm a noob, but I opened her up to see if any of the input solder joints were loose and couldn't see any obvious issues. What do I need to begin looking...
So I've been reading about basic looper wiring since I came up with a pretty ambitious looper build for a beginner , and I've noticed some discrepancies with different diagrams on the web.
First, I was directed to the very informative Beavis site, and I was looking at his diagrams for loopers. I'll use just one of them for reference:
My question is, why did he wire the input signal like that instead of just using one connection to the center row of poles and jumping the necessary bottom...
Hi everyone. I just want to build some pedals. I am a self employed carpenter remodeler with two kids and I am putting my wife through school. In other words, I have no business being on the internet trying to build guitar pedals.
I have lurked on and off on here and a couple of other forums and I really really want to take the plunge. I got an older o-scope the other day, I have made an audio probe, I have a hakko iron and have done a couple of BYOC kits.
Hey guys, I need help figuring out which inductor to use on the Vari-Tones I'm building (for my guitar projects).
So, my question is...do I actually have to use an inductor that looks like this ...or can I use this type instead :? ? Unfortunately...I don't really know the difference between the two types (sad, but true  ), or which value inductor I need (all I know, is that Torres Engineering, and most other makers use a 1.5 Henry inductor, on their Varitone clones). Thanx, in advance for...
