Ok, you got your soldering iron and nothing is going to hold you back, but you have no clue where to start or what to build. There were others before you with the same questions... read them first.

I'm tryin out a ghetto stomp build and realized I don't have 3 of the 100k linear pots the layout calls for. Here's what I have, perhaps someone could chime in and tell me what I could use/substitute to not change the sound too much but finish the build without ordering more pots. I'm not sure if I could wire some resistors to a different value pot and it work as 100k as I'm a noob.
I've been wanting to start building some pedals for some time now, and I finally decided Madbean's Current Lover seems like a great starting point.
Just to say, I've only done one project before, which was a VHR Hiwatt. That actually worked out really well.
The nice thing with the Hiwatt was that I could just order all parts, and it was 'just' a matter of putting it together.
Now, having to order each individual part - which is a first time for me - I'm questioning some things since...
Ok, I need someone's help I'm building a power supply to supply just one pedal, I was looking for a pcb layout that offers one 9vdc output that's filtered and can be varied by a potentiometer to accurately set it.
Hi guys,
Iam trying to make really old phaser usable again, the pots are really bad and need replacement, but I am not sure what to buy.
They have on them D47kMA 0.25W for the depth and regeneration and DM22A 0.25W for the speed.
What pots should I use as replacement?
I'm just now getting in to designing and refining my own schematics and my first few ideas revolve around modifying a fuzz face schematic. I have a few ideas that I'd like to implement that I've borrowed from other pedals. The first that I'd like to implement are a feedback loop and starving voltage, both are ideas that I got from the Mountainking Frequency LSD. My questions are just about how one would implement these ideas.
For the feedback loop, I'm assuming that one would just take...
I am waiting on a couple of things, but will be building the MBB kit from General Guitar Gadgets soon. My questions right now are about the process. Is it usually better to do the off board wiring before stuffing it all in the box? If not how do most folks test before boxing?
Seen a trick where a guy changed the value of a wah pot by soldering a resistor from one lug of the pot to another. The idea is to lower the value of the pot. My question is what value of resistor do I need to make a 100k pot lower so it will be more like a bass wah where the pot is 20k instead of 100. Is this an easy way to get more bass out of my wah? I have an old colorsound wah and wanted to experiment with this idea before i do anything on the board because I am an absolute beginner.
I thoroughly recommend new solderers (or disappointed longer DIYers) buy 2 crucial pieces of better quality gear: Get an Elsyn Soldapult & a 35 Watt Weller iron - you wont be as sorry as I was for using RS gear of these types for years to save $. I recommend Steve @ Small Bear Electronics, bought stuff from him since 1999.
Revelation: opening the Elsyn Soldapult package, I saw 3 words that are sheer magic, gearwise: Made in USA
The extra $ is well worth it; the threads on my (2nd) RS Soldavac...
I am trying to get into building pedals for fun (and to save $) and I find some great vero layouts that I'd like to build, but being a newbie, there are symbols that I am unsure of. Can anyone send me to a reference chart. Some of them I know, but there are some that I am unsure about. One of which is a kind of semi circle with 3 letters inside. There are others as well, so any info or help would be appreciated.
I got a new multimeter that has the hfe tester - so I decided to test it.
I get a value of 223.. which starts to drop slowly - I waited until it dropped to 214 but Im sure I will continue to drop this takes about a minute.
is that a normal reading or somethings wrong with the transistors or the multimeter ?
How do you (mount/attach/secure) a battery clip to the inside of an enclosure. I've been at this for a couple of years now, and it just slays me that in that time I've learned how to build and even design my own effects with op-amps, transistors, mosfets, etc., but I still can't keep my batteries from banging around. I have those silver, 9v battery clips. I've tried a touch of JB weld and epoxy, no dice. Anyone?
Hi. I'm new on the forum. In the past I have made fx kits (trem & Red Llama clone) but I want to understand more, not just following a kit. I purchased all the parts to build the NPN boost from ebay today and can't wait to get a hold of the bit and get started. No doubt you will be hearing my cries on the forum asking for help...
Hi! First let me introdue myself. My name is Justin and I have been playing guitar for abour 18 years. For years I used a processor for all my effects, but recently I went to stompboxes. Nice ones. Now I want to get into modding and eventually building.
My question: I have a Fuzz Factory clone and it is too trebly for my liking. It came with 10 microfarad caps for the input, output and drive. I want to take away some treble and add some bass. My thought was to replace the caps with ones of...
Yet I can't find the MPSA18 Transistors.I know there is some on the bay but there a bit pricey. Can anyone recommend a good alternative... In my stash I have MPS2907AG AND 2N2907A. ( I got both of these for this build after I realized I had the wrong ones with MPS2907AG). I also have 2n5088g.
I have built my first pedal works great off a battery snap..Yet I cant get it to work off dc power socket. I am using my sound lab power supply, I us for all my pedals. I have wired the center pin as ground and the second one down as live. These two gave me a reading when I tested with my multi meter of 9v..
I recently bought this kit, from eBay as a first project. I am having trouble understanding the off-board wiring diagram, does anybody have a link to a general wiring diagram that includes pots , jacks, 3PDT etc and what actually needs grounding, thank you
Hi guys just finished my first build a tag board Super Hard On.
Took my time and it fired up first time. Loving it....
Its like a dream dome true a £150 pedal for £15.05...Yet I have a few questions...
My Tag board Super Hard On clone is a lot clearer when up full then my mates real Super Hard On. Yet with the Knob half way the real Super seems to have just a bit more sparkle. Does anyone know why this may be?? The amp settings remained the same both pedals...
I am about to start building some projects from Andertons EPFM and DIY Projects books. I've taught myself how to solder etc and is going well. Before I try etching my own PCBs etc I want to try some simple projects. However, I have a query about connecting hook up wire for P2P connections and how to do this for intersecting wire connections on a schematic. I will be using a small Hole Board for some of the more simple projects but I am a little confused about the nuts and bolts of...
Hello - after the great help I received with my screamer pedal here I decided to try to get some on one of my other failed kits
this is a big muff violet ram ver. from
When turned on the led is light but the signal is cut totally and I can only hear some scratching when I turn the tone knob... the other 2 give no reaction at all. there is no noise or anything going to the amp.
I've been gearing up for a few days now and already successfully built a BC Si FF variant of my own with a tone control. Now that I have like 500 caps of various capacitances neatly stored on my desk I kinda started to wonder about those and some of the other componets that I bought or am going to buy.
I see varius types of every component on ebay, like for caps it's ceramic, polyester, tantalium, multilayer, etc. and it's the same thing with the resistors as well... most of...
Hello,
I am absolute beginner - I have build only kits with very little success - 2 out of 5 kits are working. Usually if the pedal is not working I give up because I don't have enough knowledge for troubleshooting . But in this case I decided to ask for help - maybe it is something minor.
the kit I'm trying to build is a tube screamer clone from this store :
I'm get only a deep cracking noise from the pedal (when there is a signal coming from the guitar) that doesn't seams to be changing...
I got it working last night and was happy for a while but after comparing it to originals on youtube I realized mine has nothing like the violin like sustain it should have but instead sounds hard edged and brittle with not enough gain. I first tried it out without the clipping caps (C6 & C7) and it sounded awful but things improved when I put a 1uf cap in as C7, however I didn't hear any change when I put in a 1uf cap as C6? which leads me to suspect that one of the gain stages isn't working,...
