Ok, you got your soldering iron and nothing is going to hold you back, but you have no clue where to start or what to build. There were others before you with the same questions... read them first.

I'm planning on building Wampler PlexiDrive but can't figure out how one would wire this with the input/ouput and power supply. I'm planning on using the offboard wiring mentioned here . I found a picture of another member who build a PlexiDrive. In the picture I see 4 wires which need to be connected to other parts. Which parts would this be and what else has to be connected using wires? I'm planning on using both a battery and 9 volt adaptor. You're help is greatly appreciated!
Hey pretty new at all this, just ordered a bunch of parts with 100v ratings, and they look a little big, just wondering if 100 is overkill and if its cool to use components around 25-50 volts. Thanks!
This is my first post and I'm sorry if this question has been answered a hundred times before. I tried practicing soldering last night and I couldn't get the perfboard hot enough to melt the solder. How hot does the iron have to be? I think I had it at thirty watts. May have been 20 though.
I have a 5 way power bank similar to the Signal Flex PS-9, Sound Lab Power Bank and the Meridian power bank it is unnamed so im not sure what make it is. I am currently building more pedals than the five outputs its offer and wondered if anyone knows if it is possible to run a daisy chains off the outputs to add more to my pedal board.
So, I'm starting to get into this modding pedals thing (really starting from zero), so today I disassembled a couple of battery chargers/transformers/remote controllers in order to grab some components from them.
I found some capacitors, some resistors, some diodes and some other stuff unknown to me.
I put some of them in my scanner to take a picture, and here it comes as attachment.
Here there are the components:
A - what is this? It has SC 455E written on one side
I built a 5 knob fuzz pedal using the PCB and wiring layout off of here:
I put it all together, drilled out the enclosure and housed it all inside just to check there was no contacts touching that shouldn't be but I get nothing when tested. No LED, no signal, using a battery or 9v power supply.
What's the best next step? Should I disassemble everything (assuming the PCB is all good) and try re-assmebling the pots/switch and inputs?
I'm a little unclear about using a multimeter/audio...
Sorry, I know there are a lot of combine 2 effects threads but I couldnt find one that addressed this specifically.
If I want to combine the 2 circuits in the top drawing, do I leave the clouded section in, or do I remove the output/input caps and pull down resistors and join them as in the second drawing? I know just hooking the input and output together would work, but are the extra caps necessary since the signal is already converted to DC and doesnt need to go back to AC until it leaves...
Hi guys and appologies for the absolute no0b question I'm about to ask; any help is GREATLY appreciated
The input jack socket in the image below (circled in red) has three connection points to the circuit. I'm a bit confused as assuming the guitar jack is mono it should only have 2 connection points (ground and the tip). To further my confusion, the output socket only has 2 connections.
I just received my PCB for building this fuzz pedal:
and I have sourced all the parts listed here:
but folli9wng this wiring layout diagram:
I can't work out what the blue 3x3 grid thing is and what it's doing? I know it's got soldered contacts on it like some kind of circuit board but what is it's purpose and how would I make one/what am I buying?
I have all the other components to begin making it but just unsure what that part is and what I'm doing with it!
I've found a cool video to teach the very basics of what a schematic is, why it's useful (compared to physical layouts), and some components symbols:
(The rest of Collin Cunningham's videos on Make blog are worth seeing also.)
The most important thing to understand about schematics, is that they abstract everything mechanical (positions, size and shape of components and wires), but keep everything electrical exact. You can then concentrate on the function of circuit, and take care of the...
I am a serious noob and am just about to embark on my first project. I have noticed that on the veroboard layouts some of the components are writen up or down as you can see in the pic and i was wondering what is the difference and which way is which. im guessing one is possitive and the other negative and if this is the case which end is which.
Hey guys, noon here, I am not a complete beginner as I have done 5 or so pcb builds and a dew re houses. But I am looking to get into veto, any one have Amy suggestions on a build that would be good for me? Also it would be great if it was a decent pedal as well.
Just to help out a bit...here is my list of data sheet sites:
Generally, if I can't find it on the first 2 sites, it probably doesn't exist or so few were made. Or maybe someone forgot? :)
So I'm a complete beginner and I'm building this smokey amp circuit, would really appreciate some help
i was wondering if someone could please tell me how to wire in a couple of things to this
a 3 pin volume pot
a jack output so it can be wired into a big speaker (im still putting in a small speaker as well)
a power output (im using the battery as well but want to be able to plug it in too)
I was just wondering what I should be expecting when I buy a bag of Mojo fuelled, super expensive NOS Germanium Transistors? How like am I to get a full bag of magic how many do you usually bin? I am talking about those that have high leakage 500uA, low gain <25 or just plain old duff?
Also how does does high leakage affect the build ? I have read Relative Importance of Gain in Fuzz Face
Ok so I have signal throughout my entire circuit but I have no effect at all. Actually the only place I dont have signal is at some spots in my diode clipping circuit, but I dont feel like this is the prob at all. Also, how can I get my pots and inputs and outputs grounded? I have to hold my cable to get it grounded. This is all on a bread board by the by. Ty for the help in advance!
I decided it would be a good idea to start building pedals. For my first pedal I decided to make a Way Huge Red Llama.
I bought all the parts and soldered it all up, but then no sound! :O
After a bit of wiggling I managed to get a signal through, though severely weakened, and only when I move component in the right way.
I'm a bit of a novice I should mention to soldering, so I'm not sure if I burnt out some of the small caps with high heats?
When I wiggle the gain pot I sometimes get a loud,...
I got an old TI-83 calculator with a busted screen, and I'm thinking off taking the z80, memory, and clock stuff and moving it all onto another PCB. Any advice as to how to do so without burning out either of those chips? Or would it be simpler just to mess with it while it's still attached to the calculator? I've got a little soldering experience, I almost stop burning myself with the iron now :thumbsup .
Hello. I just discovered this fantastic site last week. I am extremely keen to get started on some stompbox building but am a complete and utter novice. I only have the loosest grasp of how to read schematics and the only wiring I have ever done before is installing new pickups.
I would be very grateful if somebody could suggest a book or website that gives the absolute basics (like how to read schematics) and, if you have the time, an idea of the equipment I will need, to get started.
i tried to use the search function but i didn't really get any results that answered my question.
I just started out building this summer. I'm a student in the city and live in an apartment. So i have to build pedals in my room. I am a little concerned about the fumes of the solder, as I notice that my eyes are getting a little dry and itchy after soldering, especially in the colder months when i can't really open the window all the time. Could this be because of the lead in the...
I have a hell of a time visualising the flow of current or understanding why stuff that's sent to ground actually does anything.
For example, look at any tubescreamer or rat schematic where the clipping diodes go to ground.
I know that it's clipping the signal and that's where we're getting the distortion from but how the hell does it get from there to the output? How are we hearing anything if it's going to ground?
Sorry I'm new to this forum and a total noob in the world of stompbox making...I've never made a stompbox/effect pedal before.
I was wondering if anyone could give me schematics to a simple easy to make fuzz or distortion pedal (idk what to call it).
I have experience in handling wires and a friend who has experience in electronics will be helping me out in reading schematics and stuff.
He has made robots and stuff before that actually work so im sure he can help me out (:
Hello! I have just completed my second pedal build (Bazz Fuss & Colorsound One Knob), so my competency status has been upgraded from Complete Moron to Serious Dumbass . As I'm starting to learn more, I've run into a basic theory problem.
One of the basic rules of electronics is that the direction of current flows from the negative terminal of a battery to the positive terminal. Yet up to this point, I have been reading schematics/layouts from upper left to lower right and visualizing the power...
