Washburn - A-AD9 Analog Delay gutshots

I got a broken Washburn A-AD9 on the cheap, sounds pretty good. New input jack got it tightened up. I was surprised to find it has some nice chips and is made pretty well. I think this same delay was sold under a variety of brand names. Judging by the model #, it's a clone of the Ibanez AD9. Let's see if I can get Photobucket to display the pics:

According to Discofreq's FX Site that circuit was made under many names.

In the 80's Martin sold a line of electric guitars under the name Stinger and they also sold some pedals too. Below is a schematic of the Stinger DE-80 which is identical to the Washburn A-AD9 except for the switching circuit.

Here are PCB top shots of the Stinger and Epiphone versions. I like these delays, although my poor Stinger may have to sacrifice it's 3005 for an AP build.

Added a bigger version of the DE-80 schematic. I can't guarantee that it's 100% correct, but should be pretty close.

Nice, thanks for the info/schem guys. Funny, I was thinking of swiping the chips for an AP build as well! I might keep an eye out for the Stinger and Epi versions. I wouldn't have guessed these cheap brands had nice parts in them.

With the MN3005 chips getting so hard to source and expensive, some of these old and lesser known delays are probably worth buying for parts.. especially if they're beaten up or not working.

The 8 pin in these are TL4558P's...Look at the pics. These are direct clones of Maxon AD-9's basically. Don't give up your box and don't trash it for a "better" version. Keep it stock and buy some parts to build what you want otherwise. Don't trash it if you haven't already.

Eehrm.... not really...
This one and the AD9 very roughly follow the same signal flow as any analog delay. They both have a BBD (different) chip and a compander. That's where all common features between this Washburn and the AD9 stop. They're both delays. That's all.

Calling this a clone of an AD9 is similar to stating an Electric Mistress would be a clone of a Boss BF2. Or a metalzone a clone of a tubescreamer.

I found this thread because i am fixing up a very similar delay.

This one is the CODE CAD2 Analog Delay, which is not listed at DiscoFreq's FX site yet. I'll get some pics over there.

I (foolishly!) bought it as a project off ebay.

It came without the back. Someone had been attempting some kind of repair and/or mod and then probably left it on their workbench for years and years.

When i got it, only 3 wires were attached to the board (the rest broke off) and at least one of them was wrong. The input wire was attached to one untrimmed leg of a .068uf film cap, which wasn't connected to anything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The board looks extremely similar to the Epiphone version, just some capacitor value differences (maybe just cap type differences?) and no notches cut out of the corners, and an accommodation for what i presume would have been a "check battery" LED or something.

Based on the various schematics and diagrams I hooked everything up. There were a couple ground wires missing, and it needed a new output jack and a new momentary switch.

It has a BOSS-like arrangement of thumb-screw and grommet. Needs a new grommet and a new compression spring (worn out / missing).

It turns on when i press the button but does not stay on.

I'm a bit new to the fx pedals game. I'm not sure what to look for. I guess I'll try and figure out how the power on/off circuit is supposed to work.

I should stress that i don't have any way of knowing if the wire colors are original. And it's still possible something is hooked up wrong.

I am reasonably certain that the switch i pulled out was momentary just like the one i put in. Different brand, different features, basically same kind of switch (nearly the same size, same thread, etc)

This also looks close to the locobox-ish delays...

There seem to be a missing greenie cap at the bottom left of your last picture. If the flip-flop circuit is there (looks like it regarding the surrounding components, but not sure :hmmm: ), it may not keep its on/off state?

Have a look at R.G's...

Seems I was wrong about the flip flop... Check here, it really looks like the Stinger DE-80, although the BBD is different. Anyway, it has a full schem and layout to help!

Those pads are marked for a resistor.

But yeah it's an issue in the flipflop circuit for sure. Just a question of what. At some point today I will start testing components.

I did use the Stinger DE-80 board drawing on that site to get this one wired up.

I think the previous tech to mess with it was trying to figure out what wire goes where without the benefit of all this shared knowledge. I mean, he had a greenie cap tacked to the wire from the input jack, so he must have been trying to figure out which hole is for the input wire.

The power is a flipflop, just maybe not the exact same variation as ibanez. Any of those two transistors, two caps, and diode may have failed.

The retired EE I bugged on irc last night told me that the exact transistor won't matter much, but they need to be close in specs.

This board is all 2SC945. If one of them is bad, I will probably find a pair of pn2222a that are more or less matched out of the hundred or so i have.

Hello
I have one of these since years, but it doesn't self-oscillate with slower delay times : i guess i can adjust one of the trimmers inside to change this behaviour, right ?
Could anyone tell what all the trimmers do ? Which one should i set to make the feedback wilder ?

ok, I tried to tweak the trimmers, so here is what i found :

This looks very much like the Arion Layouts !!
Does anyone agree with me or have more info ?
