An oldie, but a goodie. I ended up simply replacing R9 with a 10k trimpot so that I could adjust the volume to suit. It's really a good option. I like it set to around 6k. Some people prefer using a 4.7k resistor instead for a more dramatic increase in volume.

Other have posted elsewhere that one needs to mod R19 or R28 to fix the volume drop problem, but replacing R9 did it for me.

This might help somebody.
