New to this and after researching a few clones i'ld like to build and now wondering where to source the parts, and thought i'ld find something in the forum (well maybe there is pages in) thought it would be a good idea to have a sticky post listing reliable / affordable suppliers in various regions.

if it exists already my apologies and please point me in the right direction

hey granpa, welcome to fsb.

useful suppliers depends on where you are. a rough location would help narrow it down.

speaking for the uk, the two i use most are dr tweek and bitsbox. they are pretty much geared up to stompbox building so source a good range of stomp-appropriate parts of audio-grade quality. they also know the difference between a useful germanium diode and an olive on a cocktail stick, which is not the case with a few ebay sellers. but obviously, the prices reflect that attention to detail.

for more involved dedicated bits like specific pcbs, belton brick, etc, i use fuzzdog pedalparts.
http://shop.pedalparts.co.uk/

have had excellent service from all the above.

there are a few other uk places but they seem (to me) to be for bulk orders, if you are making lots of pedals, rather than one-offs.

for resistors (the bits you will use most of) it's probably worth buying a kit of various values (10 or 20 of each) to get you started. a lot cheaper and less fiddly than ordering odd bits as you go along. something like this is a good beginners kit (well i got it and i thought so) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161270963805.
also worth using chinese ebay sellers for bulk ordering offboard things (10x 100K pots, 10x jacksockets, etc) you will always need. but maybe hold back with that until you really get the habit and know you will definitely use them all.

enjoy your building,

tabbycat.

Anyone know of suppliers in Hong Kong with a store front that's worth a visit? Heading to Hong Kong, must be a few gold mines around the place - couldn't find anything useful via google search

Hi,
I've been in HK last year and I also thought there would be some "gold mines" to be found.

Overall, electronic parts and products are not cheaper in Hong Kong than anywhere else, those days are long gone.
Also, even the cheap stuff you get there is the same exact products you get in Ebay or Aliexpress for the same price and free shipping.

Hong Kong sellers are pretty rude, and you will not find that many nice people in stores, sometimes they don't even care at all about the costumer an can be quite arrogant and non-interested in the costumer.

Most electronic stores are in Sham Shui Po area.

Love My Switches Portland, OR - USA. Along with the usual things, they have some excellent top quality 3PDT footswitches you won't find anywhere else. Great selection of knobs. Crazy cheap pots.
Stompbox Parts Holland, MI - USA. Jon Cusack's new store. Good selection, most of the parts are the leftover stock from the (thankfully*) now-defunct Mammoth Electronics.

Tayda Electronics Thailand. Lots of people already know this one, but I didn't see it on the list yet. Big selection of parts and extremely cheap. Sometimes the quality is so-so, as you'd expect from a switch you paid $0,20 for, but overall reasonable quality for when you don't need anything fancy. Fast international shipping via DHL.

*I'm thankful Mammoth is out of business because they had the absolute worst customer service I have EVER experienced in all my years buying electronics parts online. Worse than even the dodgiest ebay sellers. Not surprised in the least that they ceased to exist.
