I have to say, after testing this opamp highly recommended by JHS, it does sound incredibly different than say a 4558 etc.
Much more....dare I say it.....Amp Like!
It certainly added some personality to The Crank which IMO was a very generic and sterile sounding circuit with a 5532 per the schematic.
Just wanted to say to those that have not tried this IC, give it a whirl.
JHS was right, it can make a difference.

I have a bunch of what are, IIRC, the single version...the LF351N ...I'll have to give them a test drive.

Wonder why they are so damn expensive compared to other generic types here though? About $2.42 (converted currency) for one DIL8 at my local electronics shop.
Are they perhaps out of production?
Have you tried out LM833N ? Seem like they have some reputation for sounding good in distortion and overdrive circuits. For instance that mi-audio guy http://www.miaudio.com/CB1.htm use them in his boxes.

Yes it s a goody.
Also rarely mentioned but very good results for me in various applications the 4560...

I have to admit, I was a bit surprised by the tonal differences and to use a boutique catch-phrase, it did sound more "musical".

The LM1458 is very smooooth, BUT lacks bite or edge in my view (or hearing)

There a some other great sounding ICs:
The Philips uA741 is IMHO the best sounding 741, get them while you can.
Other very good sounding OPs are the AD 711JN and the JRC 072BD, IMHO the most "musical" sounding 072 of all 072 and excellent dynamic response, a bit warmer sounding than the ND-LF353N and a very goos subs for the 353N.
KIA 4558, a bit more grit than the TI 4558P or Jthe RC 4558D.
JRC/TI 1458, same sound as the 4558 but less middy with slight top end sizzle.
JRC 4559 and 4560 or the JRC 4558DD (a bit fatter and more gain than the 4558D and less noisy)

I found the TLC2262 gets a bit mushy almost germanium like when driven hard - I have not tried the TLC2272 yet though, it may stay a little clearer like a TL072 I suspect - The TLCxxxx series are 100% mosfet opamps, not Jfet input devices and bipolar drive and output stages - they also will swing rail to rail for a greater dynamic range too.
Tech 21 use them a lot IIRC

The 351 and 353 were the first opamps I was using 15 years or so ago for distortion boxes and overdrives. They were cheap and sounded good. The first time I used one for a clean microphone amp it sucked, putting in a more hi-fi chip sorted that.
Always wary of mojo bullshit I have to agree that the 35x is a good distorter. As is the venerable 741, it's shitty slew rate etc. is good for non clean stuff.

It's interesting that what works in one pedal doesn't in another.
Catalinbread Silverkiss - Stock with TL072 was harsh and a bit buzzy. Swapped it out for a Burr Brown OPA2134 (I think that's the one) and while I lost a little of the max gain, it smoothed the sound right out.
BJFE Little Green Wonder - Stock was the LF353N. No other IC sounded better.
MI Audio Crunch Box - I want to say stock was a 4558 and so-so sounding. Swapped for an LM1458 and changed my opinion about it.
DIY Bluesbreaker Build - Started with a TL072 and liked it. Tried the LF353N, OPA2134, LM833N and a couple of others without liking what I heard. Popped in a BA4558 and got a nice sound. I think I have the LM1458 in there now and that's lasted the longest.
I know I have some JRC072's lying around. I'll have to give those a try.

To be honest I never poked around inside other than changing the IC and I no longer have it. I thought the EQ was very effective. There where a couple of issues in the first 50 that people complained about but they seemed to have been straightened out in the next batch. I played a Silverkiss Mk. II the other day. Stock is LM833N, not 4558. The version I built has an 072 in it because I had that on hand. It sounds so-so.The Rotagilla wrote:
