Yeah, true. I am taking a bit of a break from this amp as my immediate finances are tied up in repairing my PC. The cooling sucks badly in that it blows. It blows so badly it totally sucks. I almost hit Tjmax on my processor the other day so it's time to get the CPU on water. Money for the PCBs is waiting of course, so let me know when this is to happen.

I totally lied about the break. :applause:

The pre-amp board is so ripe for being made modular that we owe it to ourselves to chop it up. If you refer back to the composite schematic I pieced together from the service manual, I think that it would not be unreasonable to chop it up into the following components:

INPUT (pre-amp, enhancer, pre-EQ "DI-1")
PRE-LIMIT (limiter)
EQ (semi-para, timbre)
POST-LIMIT (post-EQ "DI-2", limiter)
SWITCH
HEADPHONES (auxiliary board)

These can easily be made into smaller interconnected circuits to form a basic "INPUT > PRE-LIMIT > EQ > POST-LIMIT" chain with no impact on the outside presentation of the amp. My only reason for really pushing this possibility is that the INPUT board for example, could be replaced by the initial valve stage of the Eden WT-400/800 amps or in fact anything that satisfies the functional conditions of that circuit block. In addition, the EQ block could easily be replaced with the equivalent Eden 3-band "semi-parametric" EQ, the TF 4-band or any pornographic number of cascaded gyrators you want. The switch thing can be sacked off to taste. Limiters of varying sexy design can be patched in. The power-amp is what it is. That could even just go into a seperate unit, especially given my rack fetish. Mmmm. Racks.

*NSFW - contains racks.

I see this unit as a bullet-proofing of the original AMP version than original work, and rather than just slavishly copying Dave's build approach I think it would be fantastic to build upon what Russ started. Open Source amp y'all! :horsey:
I like what Eden did to the design in several ways, but the flaws are obvious with some of them translating across to the TF amp also. The PCB-mounted cement resistors are a perennial bitch with Edens. There is no excuse for not using better chassis-mount components like the Dales you suggested. The choice of using an EI tranny in the TFs instead of a Toroid as in the Edens still throws me for a loop. I understand the inrush current is enough to black out the neighbourhood but hell.

It isn't even as though this amp is anything complex or amazing. Just a cursory perusal of the amp gutshots on Talkbass and you see some nightmares that make you want to trace LED TVs including their silicon instead. By eye, drunk. What would be awesome however is a solid meaty amp based on a tried and tested design where it is eminently possible to chop and change it to suit personal taste.

And racks. RAAAAAAACKS MAAAAAAN.

I could be convinced by white PCBs. I asked about yellow and whether the silkscreen is black (like the white PCBs) but no....WHITE. What the fuck? :whappen:

Prostheta,

the thunder*****.

Lets call it something different. I'll let you do the honors. Call it something cool. Like Dingleberry 750.

I'll send you $ via paypal asap. then you just ship me what boards I bought. :) I'm still looking for a chassis though. I'd like to find that kind that Dave uses for his amp. But I don;t even know where to start.

WHITE PCB!!!!!!!!! Unless they do orange or purple or.....Just no blue or green. Or red..ugh, red pcb's look fugly. Could we tie-dye a pcb? :hmmm:

Hang fire before sending cash. I'm a bit strapped for it myself at the moment what with studying and all. Email me and we'll figure out what we're doing.

I'm cool with compromises. I have no real preference really. I think white would be cool. But if the price goes way out there..then basic green is cool with me too. :D

But I also want to see Baja's single sided pcb layout.

Here is the single sided layout composite pictures - i used different pcb socket footprints because I have lots of them
preamp.GIF
one of Sprint layout v5.0s limitations - board can only be a maximum of 300 mm x 300 mm, so it is in two parts.
enjoy

Wow, and the board size didn't increase! What magic dost lie in thine pint, Baja?

poorly designed double sided boards are totally unnecessary for such a simple design

Agreed. Poor as they might be, the effort put into moving all the connectivity to unified headers is pretty sweet though. That and the PCB house I use don't differentiate price on single or double-sided, so I was able to just take a direct copy of the circuit.

Did you figure out some of the schematics oddities as mentioned earlier in the thread, Baja? The service schematic is very much inconsistent with how the PCB stands.

Do we have gerbers of the power amp and the power supply??

Between me, Prostheta and Baja..we got ourselves a real nice bas amp in the making....or at least a killer DIY project.

Yes, I traced everything including the poweramp if I recall. I haven't had these files open in a long time so I need to refresh. Been drawn away to other work I'm afraid as this was supposed to be my summer project whilst on holiday. If I could source the correct transformer or equivalent for this, I would be sorely tempted to get one of these built. Any luck on that score, Mike?

I still need to test the transofrmer I have. But I got in touch with the company that makes the ones for Dave Funk.

I can send them specs once I figure out how to calculate specs.

For instance...I have pdf's of the Sanken output trannies...but if I am powering 6 of those...lets say around 90vdc..I do not know the needed current...

Yeah..I should know the math off hand..but I am lazy.
