Laney Cub 10 tone circuit mod
I have a Laney Cub 10 which has a nice crunch to it, but even with a speaker upgrade it's a bit dark. If my tone control would only go to 11..... Anyway single coils and bright humbuckers are great but I wouldn't mind a bit more brightness for some other guitars. A schematic of the amp is here:

On TGP a simple mod was posted for achieving this goal but before I tear out the iron and break something I'd really appreciate if someone that knows what they are doing wouldn't mind taking a look. I don't know if the author is a 12 year old twit vaping in his room when mommy is gone and making things up, or Tesla incarnated. Unfortunately my circuit analysis skills are more in line with the 12 year olds.

You could just make C7 smaller,, try 1nF or even 500pF.
That would tilt the tone in favor of more treble with a minimum of fuss and easy to reverse if you don't like it.
Phil.

Thanks for taking the time to look I appreciate it.phatt wrote:You could just make C7 smaller,, try 1nF or even 500pF.

For anyone else interested I found some other information on voicing:
Laney Cub 10
Remove R5 and R6 and replace it with 250K pot for treble control
Remove R12 and replace it with 250K pot for bass control
Fender deluxe tone control mod
Change C3 (470pf) with 250pf
Change C6 (22nf) with 100nf
Change C8 (22nf) with 47nf
Change R17 (8.2K) with 6.8K
Laney Tone caps are similar to marshall JMC800.

I'll give C7 a shot and try and report back. Might be a while as it's probably an 0402 which I doubt I have any of, and just buying a qty of 1 off DigiKey seems a bit silly.
I suppose it's like sticking a blower on your engine and cutting a hole in the hood for it to stick out. Form versus function. In my case if i were smart I'd spend time learning to play and less time messing with equipment! Thanks for your help I appreciate it.phatt wrote:Yes a full tone section would be helpful **IF** you have enough room to fit 3 extra pots??

This amp is mostly through hole, I put in a 470pF 100V cap. in C7. Tone setting on 6 or 7 seems most similar to when it was on 10 before. I like it better now, thank you for your help.phatt wrote:You could just make C7 smaller,, try 1nF or even 500pF.

Great to hear it worked out
Yes this is one place you can change the response of the whole circuit.
This is R/C maths, you can change the value of either the grid resistor or the coupling cap.
You could have changed the resistor to 100k and left the 4n7 cap and have similar results.
But yeah,, you do have to know just where to tweak the circuit
