Favorite boost/low gain, amazing pedal?

I've been on my quest for a really good boosty/light OD for sometime. I'm looking for something thats not really TS voiced, or marshall voiced, just something that can let the guitar and amp speak, push the amp. I've also had issues with uneven/fuzzy decay - some circuits worst that others. I think thats my biggest beef with a lot of pedals is the decay, I'm looking for something real smooth. Doesn't need to have a lot of gain on tap, just enough to help push my Ampeg V4. And something that could stack well with fuzzes..

What do you recommend/really like?

Try an op-amp clipper with a pair of Si diodes each way, treble control via a simple low-pass, and bass control by using a pot to choose between two bass caps from the non-inverting amplifier's -ve input to Vref.

This sounds like a knowledgeable answer; would an example of this be the DOD 250? I'm interested in something like this too.

For a V4? I'd go Colorsound Powerboost. It's pretty much clean up until the high end of the gain rotation then it jumps into a fuzzy beast. Plus the low and high controls radically effect the gain and tone (obviously). I spent a ton of time trying different boosters and drives with my V4 and the Colorsound won by a long shot.

i'm with Crumbchildz, but i just built a colorsound overdriver clone, and love putting it b4 my amp, with my bluesbreaker behind it, lovely sounds, what a loud biotch and clear too, until the end then a fuzzy biotch :D

How about the Electra? Heck, it's only about 8 components, worth a try to breadboard it.

Simple clean no color boost.... slam it with a LPB-1. That's about as simple as it gets. Sounds like my guitar, and sounds like my amp, just more of it! Early 80's I used to run a 59' LP jr into a LPB-1 into a Morley echo into a Bassman 100. Simple is good.

That looks very cool.. I'll have to try it when I get a chance.
I'd really love to hear a clip or two.

I'd agree with that... It certainly doesn't color the sound much. A good kick without much change in tone, even cranked.

I'm not looking for a total boost pedal. I'd like it to have some gain on tap. I'd also be using it with my small 1x10 combo.

I'd say that the LPB-1 is good for that, too. It will get a bit of growl going at higher settings. For a lot of fun, cascade one into another for some mild snarl.

I tried a Zvex Super Duper and didn't like how it sounded cascaded or even with the just the one master volume SHO, the decay was very loose and nasty. I know you mentioned LPB-1 but I guess I'm assuming they're similar, or enough to maybe yield the same results..?

you might like this one.

it's very transparent, and is kind of similar to the CSO, minus the EQ of course. it also works excellent as a buffer.

It sounds like you need a Timmy. Come to think of it, everybody should have at least one.

From a different thread...

It's got a clip of the new mystery Klon (in a cardboard box).

35 minutes long, 30 different overdrives...

I think the real question is do you want any color in your drive or clean boost?
Originally it sounded like you wanted to hear your guitar and amp... but we all know there's a little color in any pedal...so check out the video...All the overdrives sound similiar, but the differences are there for you to decide.

My board has a DS-1 modded into tubescreamer territory and no diodes just alot of BOOST.
So that's another idea... Ds-1's are dirt cheap and easy to mod and remod and remod and remod.... :hmmm:

so, you want something more of a booster than of an overdrive, let's say a very slightly overdrive, soft & transparent enough. I think of Barber ltd. Take a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFQJulI6rQg
