Guys.. we have mods from around the globe that delete the spam constantly.. 24/7.
But we're getting 30 to 50 posts a day.
What we need is more screening during registration.. it's just too easy to join to post this crap.

Dirk, If it's any consolation I feel your pain too, there's already in place international laws making Spamming illegal (as far as I know), the trouble is catching and prosecuting the perpetrators, so I'm with you on this although I don't really have much of a desire to become a moderator for the foreseeable future..... :thumbsup

Maybe there's some way to re-direct the spam back to whoever sent it so that they end up clogging-up their own systems..... :hmmm:

Let me stress that my post from yesterday is in no way intended as critisism on moderation. The mod team is doing a fine job. However, Juanro in above quote echo's excactly what I meant.

what Greg and |v|ark said stands.. I'm pretty sure that tougher sign up filtering would help significantly.

as for being a mod.. the spam was the main reason I became one... there's no facility to just allow the banning of spammers as a role, cos that's kinda what I asked for so mod was the only other option that modman could offer...

spam sucks it's a real bugbear of mine :x

I reckon the best way to defeat the spammers is to use their own methods/tactics against them, ie: re-direct the spam back to them..... :thumbsup

I agree with you Lucifer, I hate spammers just as much as anyone else here..... :thumbsup

I think there's an online website where you can put in a report or complaint against their ISP to, I remember seeing one for reporting phone scams on the net somewhere..... :hmmm:

They never or hardly ever use there own IP address. I am a mod on another forum and the first thing I do is to check where their IP is. It usually turns out to be from a computer in a completely different part of the world, not sure how it is done as I don't understand a lot of the internet stuff.

So sending spam back or reporting the ISP is pretty pointless as they have probably moved onto another vulnerable computer hours ago.

What we do is
Ban the username
Ban the IP address (in case another spammer tries to use it)
Ban the email address
Delete the user and all posts.

I'm not sure if anyone else has been experiencing this, but all day today I've been trying to log on only to end up getting some kind of my SQL error, and when I have actually been able to log on I've noticed that the most recent threads/posts were missing, so I left things alone for a while and just tried logging-on about a minute ago, had to request a new password but not before having to try and solve a Captcha, just curious as to what was going on, was it caused by the server?.....

I would be easier if all those who don't want to become a moderator would raise their hands...
With regard to the spam problem, two option: get more advanced software solutions or assign more mods.

In this respect I already experimented with a folder where everybody had moderator rights, but it wasn't so smart because all members could see all other ip's. Still, this might not be so bad after all :hmmm:

I think maybe modman was updating the software to help with the spam problem.
I don't know if we had a Captcha before, but if not, that's gotta help.

There definitely was a Captcha, it appeared after I made several attempts to log onto FSB using the last password I was issued with Greg, the funny thing was, it even said the password was invalid, so you may be right.....I guess that explains everything..... :thumbsup
