I checked the log, and there was exactly one handbag spam thread - drama queens!

I think maybe modman was updating the software to help with the spam problem.
I don't know if we had a Captcha before, but if not, that's gotta help.

SQL error messages & captcha's come from the fsb server, amnesia comes from own server.

DrNomis wrote:There definitely was a Captcha, it appeared after I made several attempts to log onto FSB using the last password I was issued with Greg, the funny thing was, it even said the password was invalid, so you may be right.....I guess that explains everything..... :thumbsup

I haven't done any updates yet.

Nomis, you forgot your password 4 times the last month... say no more...
If you get an SQL error, take a screenshot, or at least copy & paste the text and url.
Greg changed and issued you a password? All user's can request new passwords without bothering the moderators...

Ah, okay so that's what caused my log on issues?, thanks for clearing that up modman..... :thumbsup

I'm a bit embarassed about the password-forgetfulness though......

Oh, and will do about the SQL error........ :thumbsup

I've just reported around 50 Drug ads.

It would have been far simpler if I could have just deleted them as they came flooding in - and BOY did they flood in !

Should I be a moderator ?

I notice that the ads were kicked off site fairly quickly, so maybe you don't need my help - but the offer's there. :horsey:

No.. DrNomis didn't contact me about his password.

The fact is that no matter how many mods there are, you would have to sit and constantly refresh the main page to catch all spam before anyone sees it.
IvIark used to say let me be a spam killer.. now he's a mod, I'm sure he knows you can't always get it straight away.
Just ignore it, or better, report it and it'll be gone soon.

Living here in Ozland / Downunder, I am often awake when most of the Northern hemisphere is (or should be) sleeping.
I like to do my bit to help by reporting spam to a moderator whenever I see it.
What actually happens after that? Does the nearest moderator get an email saying that spam has been reported?

a few thins happen, but not an email (because the flood would be impossible to manage on an inbox).. there are times we're deleting over 50 users or more a day.. (users, not posts, so if each user had 5 posts and they were all reported and an email was sent out each mod would get 250 emails per day).

the thread gets highlighted in a different colour and a 'reported' symbol appears beside the thread.. I'd estimate* that maybe 20% of the spam threads actually get reported.. we get to prolly 80% of it before it's ever reported..

modman has instigated a good tool that lets us delete a user and all their associated threads with as few clicks as possible, but the spammers are pretty numerous.

Sounds like you're equipped for the task, but working a little too hard!

+1 for tightening the membership signup procedures.

Maybe Modman could ask all current members to sign on again, which might help to weed out inactive members and bogus members who are only here to steal circuits for cloning and selling.

That sounds like a good idea blackbunny, I did notice a big influx of spam advertising prescription drugs yesterday, whatever in the world has prescription drugs got to do with stompbox building I'll never know, unless they're trying to sell stuff that helps with the fault-finding and debugging process, like prosac....lol...but I digress.....

One other idea might be for all members to give their computers a good scan with anti-malware and anti-virus software, since some types of malware can generate spam..... :thumbsup

There are a couple of issues with that.

1) Spam is often posted using false information or through a hacked account, either way it would be difficult/impossible to reach the 'source' of the spam.

2) If it was possible to respond directly it would have the same effect as replying to spam email - it would assure the spammer that they succeeded to break through the security and you'd suddenly see a barrage of spam using the same techniques.

The best approach is to block spam at the source, usually by making sign-up difficult or tiresome for anybody who doesn't have a direct interest in the website or using automated means. If they should succeed then it's best just to delete it. Don't respond or click any links as that will only encourage more.

That first SQL error message looks alot like the one I was getting the day before yesterday when I had alot of trouble logging on, one other thing I noticed was that the webpage did seem to take a while to load in either Internet Explorer or Firefox..... :thumbsup
