Whats going on?

Hi all
Thought some debate was appropriate?
R all guitar pedals defunct now?
Other than gain or booster based pedals,r othes pedals taking away from playing guitar with feeling and spontaneous improv? Do esoteric ic's and the like helpi play better,or is it just making someone with poor technique soumd interesting?

I was thinking about all this "you use too many pedals, you're a shit musician, proper guitarists only need one pedal" bullshit last night.....not that it hasn't bothered me since the first time I heard it mind.

There have been loads of analogies about using pedals to add colour and texture to the guitarists pallet but I considered classical composers as an example. Beethoven wasn't considered less of an organ player because he used other instruments in his compositions. In fact, if he restricted himself to playing the organ and didn't add any other instrumentation to his compositions, he probably wouldn't be the respected musician that he became....possibly get all the best groupies at organ recitals though.

I certainly wouldn't consider myself any kind of beethoven, hell I can barely consider myself a musician some days, but I don't see how restricting yourself in any way can make you "better" at anything. I think that people often get confused by the reasons that effects are used by guitarists. Does it make them a better/worse guitarist? - of course not. Does it improve the music they create? - hmm...possibly. If you only want to play traditional guitar-based music then stick with traditional guitar based setups. If you want to play something else then why restrict your sound to something that people have been listening to since the 50's?

So...yeah. That's my take on it. I couldn't give a shit about being a great guitar player because there are already millions and only other guitar players care. I do give a shit about being original though and the instrument I happen to play best is the guitar...plus it can sound like a guitar, which are pretty cool things.

Anyway....as you were...

Yes sir,standing easy
I think we agree in general? The pedals(colour, etc) must serve the music.I think at points we miss this, and a fancy pedal becomes an exercise in being more complex than that which came before.A fuzzface is a simple circuit, but building a great sounding one,is an art.I'm against building a pedal cos its build makes others look stoneage, but prefer a goal centered approach.Isolate the tone or effect we wamt, then work to that end.Sometimes this can be just puttimg a few standard pedals together Have a tone in mind

Sorry,last question
Rog and ggg do great kits that take a lot of legwork out of pedal building, but i've been reading the stompbox cookbook by n.boscorelli, and its revolutionary! No,tonebenders, squeezers, screamers, but truly unique pedals
Does anyone know where i might pickup pcb's for this great tome?

There's so many Biffa's, how to tell which one is the real one!?

If you're really Biffa, what's your surname?

If you have a copy of the PDF it should contain artwork for PCBs for all the projects in the book, you could then use the Blue Press-N-Peel Film/Ammonium Persulphate Etchant method of making the PCBs yourself.... :thumbsup

I actually got on alright with the 'original' Biffa and do remember his real name.

Although if Godebut was actually him, he called me a sneaky little shit 2 pages back for no reason so fuck him.

I can't even remember why the hell all this stuff started...

My first ever pedal build was a CSOKF from a vero layout by biffa, he was pretty helpful in some circumstances.

If you trawl the catfight thread around 2010, you'll probably find examples of the "incidents" that led to his departure, mainly involving his taking any comments or suggests relating to his posts as slights on his character.

And I basically started this thread cause I found that a number of FSB members thought I was Biffa in disguise, but, it was only them trying to wind me up just for fun.... doesn't bother me in the least cause I know it's all in jest and I see the humour in it....... :thumbsup
