I bought one of those K150 things a while ago, now it could have been broken but it just never worked with the crappy software that it came with but it ended up chucked in the bin. I then went and bought a real pickit2 programmer which is great.
Software... I use the IDE 8.92 from microchip which is great, there is an IDE X but it has lots of complaints that it is just not as good as 8.92.

It's fairly straight forward, if you want to start it , press start. You can work out the rest of the controls for yourself !

Innawesting. I'd never setup a new project in IDE because, IMO, X is so frigginly more advanced.

I'll check out MPlab.
I was able to get the K150 to program a pic16f....and...I'm on Windows 10 Tech build 9860. But you have to choose the right driver.
