I recently made this silicon tonebender mkII-type fuzz:
It has a big muff sustain control between Q1 and 2/3 instead of using a pot on the Q3 emitter to control gain. Q1 is a simple boost stage with bias resistor values pretty much lifted from the wampler velvet fuzz, but minus the emitter resistor bypass cap for less woolly low end boost. Q2+3 are essentially the fuzzface-like portion of the Skreddy lunar module fuzz running at full tilt: This section has to be my favourite "fuzz circuit block" of all fuzzes I've breadboarded or built so far. It biases up perfectly with pretty much any si bjt I've tried, giving a long, smooth sustain with little or no gating to pinch off the tail of the note at low or higher gain levels.
Just finished up building it and it fired up first time using this layout:
The BMP sustain control means some low end drops out as the sustain is wound right back, making it less fuzzy and more overdrive-y.

I was planning on building mictesters hot silicon ( ) but I think I'm boldy going for this one. I have no BCXXX transistors so I'm going to experiment with my low gain silicon metal can collection. ( I love the 2N3440 ). Let's see how forgiving the biasing is

It's fine with metal can 2N2222s, if they're similar

I've just googled 2n3440.... It suggests hfe 40-160....
...maybe they'll work.

They work fine, I've tried a whole bunch of transistors they all sound pretty similar. Somehow my output volume is not so high but the sound is right so I must have goofed up somewhere on the temp pot connections. It is incredibly bass heavy though. Is that meant to be, of is there something else wrong? ( I can always lower the input cap I have it at 330n now, the rest is as per schematic). Sustain pot works good. Shouldn't the filter pot be more like 10k? Anyway, it sound promising!

I'm glad it's worked for someone else. Mine doesn't sound particularly bass heavy, or particularly quiet, though: It might be worth checking over again. The filter is lifted straight from the Rat/Lunar module, and sounds about right at noon to me. However, as always it's down to personal taste and the guitar+amp used of course, so tinker away!

I'm going to check my connections and values. It made my tele bridge PU sound like a humbucker neck PU. Might replace the filter with a SWTC. as it gives some more flexibility. I don't think it's the filter. With the pot at 50k it cuts at around 960Hz, so that is still pretty high.

Gonna give this a go this evening. Here's a perf and PCB layout I drew up. I added a polarity protection diode and reduced the power filter cap to 47µ (just because I have a ton of them and it was smaller than a 220µ). Unverified as of yet, but should be right.

Wow, tidy layouts! Thanks for this.

I really like this project, recently I would like to build a "splitted" tonebender: a booster (that can be used by himself) and a low gain fuzz (that can be used by himself too) that, joined, will give tonebenderish sounds.
The output section reminds me of a rat... I like it too.

I am experimenting this circuit on the breadboard at the moment; of course I think I will make some mods, but the basic sound is really good; what I really like is the sound of the fuzz face part and, in particular, the effect of that 100K from collector to base of Q1 (well, Q2 actually): wile experimenting I removed it and.... it went back in a second! The sound gets way bigger and bold wile, without, the sound it's thinner. Then you add Q1 in front of it and... whoa The tone control really gives a nice final touch.
Bravo.

[quote="Nocentelli"]I recently made this silicon tonebender mkII-type fuzz:
Just built this one on perfboard and it works very fine, even on bass. Thanks !
I just replaced the two 220n caps around the sustain pot with 330n, and used a 1µF film as input cap. All other values are as per the schematic.
There's just a 2k2 resistor added for the on/off led.
I used storyboardist's layout and slightly adapted it (swapped diode and 220µF cap).

It definitely sounds great on bass!
