was dicking around with an earlier circuit, the one guitarpcb called the photon phuzz, and, well, this happened....

here's a verified vero layout

what does it sound like? well.. you can use it as a buffer, a boost, an overdrive, a fuzz, gated or not, even in some settings a bit of an octave up.

its like a really hot treble booster kinda... it works real well with dark amps and humbuckers, in paricular. the voice control sweeps between useable bias, the output is lowz so it will play nice with other shit down the line. note the REVERSE BETA 5089. check jack orman's site for more deets, it works great in this circuit.
i used 5089's but pretty much anything will work for q1, ge, si, shit pnp or npn will work in some cases!! very weird. q2 has to be reverse beta and ya wanna shoot for a gain around 500. q1 can be anything from hfe 100-600 and still work well. if ya REALLY need more volume out of it, go to a 5 or 10k output pot instead of the 1k specc'd.

its good for nailing the rhythm guitar sound on deep purple's "burn", i can tell ya that much... sustains well, interacts with guitar knobs well, and will fit in a 1590b with ease. maybe a 1590 a if yer slick enough!

oh yeah, stupid pedal trick...

try it on a breadboard first i would advise.

in the video, its not boxed and is half on a circuit board, and half on my breadboard so its not as good as the final boxed product. its quiet, loud, and has a good range
of tone ya can dial in with the voice control, it shifts it thru several ranges of useable toneful bias.

if ya build it or diggit, lemme know

hi manfred,
happy new years my friend!
yes sir, q 2 is REVERSE beta, just flip it 180 degrees.
i know it sounds and looks weird, cuz we don't usually use them like that, unless
maybe devi ever with some of her fuzzes <i miss that chick, she was cool as hell on the old hcef>
anyways..

i came across it cuz when i was workin up a second stage, i used the transistor the way it sounded best on the breadboard. i didn't notice originally
it was backward! ;)

but it sounded pretty cool.. can get splatty in a good way, or real smooth n sweet. on your neck pickup, hell, in the middle even, with humbuckers ya get a noticeable octave up at some settings. into a solid state amp its more octavey than tubes tho.

here's Jack Orman's excellent article, that was pointed out to me after i made this... now i remember seeing it.

my 5089's both had 530 hFE
but you can use germanium, npn or pnp in state 1. not all will work, depends how leaky they are. npn and pnp will sound different slightly, but both WILL usually fire.

i just liked the npn 5089's the best. i tried all kindsa shit, some sounded great, some not so, to me this was most versatile.

i love breaking shit and making shit that sounds like cool shit lol
