So I opened up my 70's ibanez SG bass and was so surprised I had to post up a pic and ask if anyone knows what's up. I'm not a bass guy, but Ive not really seen this kind of set up before. Looks like a coil, a 4u7 cap, and a .22 cap. Anyone know WTF is goon on here? It's obviously an LCR network, but are there any other basses to compare to? Did the original gibbys have this too?

The Gibson's did have the choke. The way that choke is made is very similar to the Bill lawrence designed choke used in the L9-S Ripper bass and the L6-S guitar. He actually used a bolt, a nut. and three washers, and then wound the two halves of the humbucking choke on it.

The purpose of the choke and the cap is to notch out the mids.

hey thanks! I never took the time to figure out which position did what. I usually just use it in the forward position, but I'm not sure if I ever even use the choke setting. have you seen a Gibson bass schematic?
