Regulated DC Voltage Current

Postby vox_boy » 01 Oct 2014, 02:21

Hey Guys,

Quick question, if I have 10V at 500mA running into a 5V Regulator (rated at 2A for argument sake) does this mean I have 5V at 1A available (nominally) on the output of the regulator? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The short answer is no.
“No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another
good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err
if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught
only by himself has a fool for a master.”

No indeed.
It's a voltage regulator. Not a voltage to current converter.
Best case you have 5 volts at 500mA available.
Sorry. Plain out of planes.

If I may be so bold.......Do you want answers to random questions? Or, do you have a real life situation for which you are seeking a solution?
If it is the later, if you would give us the specifics, perhaps we can offer a solution. I'm just saying that you will receive better answers if we
understand the context.
