Can i use a 47k pot instead of a 20k one?

Frequently asked question regarding resistors, potentiometers, types, requirements, ratings etc.

hi, i have a damaged boss pedal which needs a pot replaced, which is a mini 20k b pot

i have a 47k b pot spare, can i just use that instead of the 20k, and if so what would be the difference?

note: it would be for a sustain knob, or a tone knob. choice of either.

ps. i heard maybe i can add a resistor to the 47k pot to bring it down closer to 20k, but does anyone know how i would 'add' it to the pot please?

thanks
