Two effects in one box switching question

Putting two effects in one box almost looks too easy, but you will save a lot of time reading the frequent questions before starting such a project...

Two effects in one box switching question

Postby marmora » 28 Jun 2008, 01:12

Here's what I'm looking to do: Build two effects into one box with a little extra flexibility. For simplicity's sake, let's call each one effect A and effect B. I plan to have regular bypass switching, but then I want to have a toggle switch that allows me to choose between these options:
Only effect A
Effect A into effect B
Only effect B
If anyone can lead me to a layout of how to do this, that would be incredible!

If you don't care about true bypass of each effect when the other one is used, you could use a special DPDT on-on-on switch on the output of each effect. These switches are a bit hard to find, in the center position they connect the center lug of each pole to the opposite lug.
Code: Select all
    /        |         \              left         center        right
 [o=o o]   [o=o o]   [o o=o]     -> Fx A output   Fx B input   input jack/Fx A input
 [o=o o]   [o o=o]   [o o=o]     -> Fx B input    output jack  Fx B output
  Fx A      both      Fx B

And then use traditionnal bypassing for the whole box.

If you do want individual true-bypass, the simple and effective way is to use standard bypass for each effect (as if they where in two separate boxes) and two footswitches. Keep them close enough to stomp on both at the same time, and you can do all the combinations : bypass, fx A, fx B, both.
That's what i did for a TubeDriver and a Phase 45 in the same box, and it works like a charm, with two Millenium bypasses.

You could even put an FX loop on the link between the two effects, have a look at the "Proco Juggernaut" thread.

Here is a GGG diagram, with true bypass grounded inputs.

Hope it helps

Thanks for the replies. What about adding a tri-color LED? One to let me know I've got effect A, A&B or B on. I've got a couple of 3 position 3PDT switches (although I think they're on-off-on)
