Totally annoying, I'd like to hear more about this proxy server. I'm thinking about changing my service. Seems AT&T only has this problem. I can access the site fine at work or other locations. It's unavailable only on my home connection.

I'm still experiencing problems with my phone over 3G (AT&T), but not over wifi (Charter).

Just tried on my iPhone with AT&T 3G service: I get a 502 Bad Gateway error.

When I switch my phone to get data from my home router (which is not AT&T), the site loads fine.

That's shady business. Fuck AT&T. I'm dropping those clowns for T-Mobile in a week anyway.

I got a very specific response saying that they are blocking freestompboxes.org. This response was from support and sounded like it came from people that knew what they were talking about.

I also talked to a person on their phone support who denied that AT&T would block any website. When I told the person that I was contacted via the AT&T facebook page they said AT&T didn't have a facebook page. They also wanted me to forward the email I had received via Facebook to their fraud dept. He seemed pretty convinced that it was fraud. Obviously this person was clueless. This guy also seemed convinced that the problem had something to do with my home network.

I would not be surprised if person you are talking to is also as clueless. You might spend a lot of time, and possibly money, but they will not be able to do anything for you. Here's a quote of the email I received.

The IP 195.74.38.18 has been blocked into the AT&T network, due to its role in a DDOS attack.

Please have the hosting company that owns this site contact us for instructions on how to resolve this.

yep. i spent alot of time but i did finally get thru to a knowledgeable tech who could actually use a command shell and confirmed that AT&T were denying access to the FSB site. she also mentioned that the host would need to contact AT&T to resolve the issue. is it beyond just a bunch of us complaining to them? i wonder how many people threatening to leave AT&T it would take to change their minds... :horsey:

The regular support people were incredibly uninformed. The person I talked to insisted up and down that AT&T does not block anything. And when I told them that I had received a message from AT&T support, over the phone, he replied that it might be fraud. I tried to explain that caller had a left a message, I called the number back and that was how I was talking this person. He refused to believe that a real AT&T person had called me.

The whole experience has made me look at my AT&T bill and wonder what I'm paying for. I notice the bill being higher than I think it should be, it has a couple mysterious surcharges. I think I'm going to change my service. I found a couple places that are cheaper.

The thing that really kills me is that no other service seems to be blocking this site. I can get to site anywhere else but home. I can't believe that AT&T thinks they are accomplishing anything by blocking this site. Their claim is that someone perpetrated denial of service attack from this domain. Okay, but they are giant operation that has to support thousands of people, all of which pay AT&T for service. So their solution is to inconvenience thousands of people because one or two people caused them some minor inconvenience.

not this domain.. this IP...the same host can have many different sites (domains) on it.

The scary thing is other providers will be following suit in the future. AT&T was the first to take this approach as the leaked memos indicated.

it does not work on my phone either.

BTW ISP's rarely block sites specifically. As mentioned they are blocking the IP's. the problem with shared IPs is that you are always subject to whatever your IP neighbors are doing. ISPs are typically very hush hush about it.
A few months ago our site (subdecay) was blocked for all comcast users for a couple of days. We have comcast here at work so we could not even send an email during that time. It took a long time to even get an answer out of comcast, but our website is on a server with 2000 other sites, so who knows which one was the actual culprit. We are going to change hosts soon and probably get a dedicated IP to avoid problems in the future.

When i talked to the generic support person through the 800 number he swore up and down that AT&T does not block IPs. They really don't want to let this out of the bag, so much so that they probably tell their workers the opposite. When I got a call from an AT&T person the more knowledgeable support person said they way be blocking. When I emailed their noc@att.net the reply was that they are blocking and the owner of the domain should contact them about this.

I'm thinking about using a new service.

hmmm... now, using a proxy, i get this from freekin' google...

This page appears when Google automatically detects requests coming from your computer network which appear to be in violation of the Terms of Service. The block will expire shortly after those requests stop. In the meantime, solving the above CAPTCHA will let you continue to use our services.

This traffic may have been sent by malicious software, a browser plug-in, or a script that sends automated requests. If you share your network connection, ask your administrator for help — a different computer using the same IP address may be responsible. Learn more

Sometimes you may be asked to solve the CAPTCHA if you are using advanced terms that robots are known to use, or sending requests very quickly.
