Sorry I saw this so late...

I short, you could just delete the attachment that are no longer relevant, if you could edit messages at all. They will indeed still exist on the server, but I clean out this folder of unattached attachments. So there really is no worry about using up webspace. That all attachments dissapear by deleting is somewhate strange. But I suspect this has to do with the fact that messages in fact cannot be edited.
You can still always report the post to the mod and have him remove the schemo.
