hey all,
Tricky question, that i bet there won't be a straight answer to, but all the articles i have about designing your own effects all seem to work off opamps. Is there any way to replace the opamp with a transistor? i have a feeling it's not going to be a simple swap over, but is there a way to replace an opamp with one or two transistors? preferably in a situation where i can swap about the transistors to whichever flavour i like.
cheers,
tm

Also check out Joe Davisson's Diode-Compression opamp at DIY.. it's known to work in many effect circuits.

From my experience the (Davisson) discrete opamp is usually cleaner and brighter than an ic version.. different, but not necessarily better.
