but I can plainly hear tone as excellent - good - fairly good - not so good - youch and jeez.....
Take Hendrix's tone, and now take Steve Albini's tone in his old band called Big Black. The latter is one of the angriest, ear piercing out of phase bitcrushed-like distorted whatever guitar sounds... now both those players have "excellent tone" to my ears, yet their guitar sounds couldn't be further apart.
To me they have "excellent tone" because it is their own (sort of signature) sound, that suited their style, suited the atmosphere they wanted to create and the approach of existence they wanted to convey perfectly. So basically good tone was probably a very different thing for Hendrix than it is for Albini, and good tone is not a predertermined recepy or a general concept.

So if i may, do you plainly hear what i'm trying to say ?

Regards,
Greg

"Good" tone is 100% subjective. I had a guitar instructor who was a tone snob and I thought his "sweet tone" was an awful compressed mess.

Greg, I like the tone of Guitar Skiiiiiiiinnnnggg too. I like how it works musically with the overall sound of the group, and I like how it mocks what other guitarists think sound good. See my posts in the thread discussing the Harmonic Percolator.

Hmmm.... since I never listened to "albini" (only know Al Bano & Romina Power) maybe somebody can explain me:

What do Hendrix and this "Alibini" have in common with:
Carlos Santana, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Brian May, Gary Moore, Joe Satriani, Craig Chaquico.... ?

They have in common that you can listen to their music and their sound....
At least Hendrix is far away from that....

There´s a sucker born every minute - and too many of them end up in the bootweak pedal biz.

Steve Albini's guitar sound is a noisy mess with a shrill nasty top-end that's intended to annoy conservative folks.

Here's a great example:

Albini is the skinny guy with glasses who's singing and making all that terrible noise with his junky guitar. It's punk music and it's not supposed to have a "great tone". I like it because I like punk music. But, I also like David Gilmour... I think people are allowed to like both.

Why do people get so upset about resistors, capacitors, and wire ? I mean, it's not rocket science or anything, and most (99.9%) or the circuits discussed here are highly derivative of classic, well known circuits. The only remotely original one I can think of is the Klon, and even that has it's roots in a basic opamp clipper. We're not curing cancer, sending a man to Mars, or doing anything that will make a zillion bucks...besides, as Fuller has proven, "originality" isn't what makes money selling pedals...."marketing" and building a good quality product is.

Who cares if someone clones another tubescreamer ? If they can't effectively build it and market it, what does it matter ?

nice one Greg :)
just to clear something up for you Bob - New Zealand is not a little island downunder - it actually comprises 3 Islands - North Island, South Island (where I exist) and Stewart Island ( a smaller island off the southern tip of the South Island ).
Do not take things so seriously Bob
you are most welcome to visit our little islands anytime you wish - come for a holiday - but be warned, you may want to stay in our friendly paradise down in the South Pacific. we have many Americans who have settled here - they are made most welcome by all.
Cheers

Most of New Zealand is beautiful... except for that one place that smells of sulphur, and smoke pours from the ground constantly... Oh , and it's really cold right down the bottom of the south island... :D

I used to play an early online RPG called Federation/Federation II on GEnie back in '89 or '90. Damn I'm getting old.

I had a friend who visited NZ. He came back ready to pack up the wife and kids and head back there. Apparently the wife had something to say about it, because he's still here!

NZ is amazing except for those days when you guys have skin melting heat. And some of the poisonous wildlife scares me. But damn its amazing, and also home to the best circuit ever designed. That hotcake is fantastic.

okay we do have a few pacific islanders from Samoa and Tonga etc., but they are not poisonous - 40 million sheep can hardly be classed as wildlife

"Again we have been told that the number one killer overall in throughout Africa is not the hippo or crocidile. It is actually the coconut. No I am not joking. More people die every year from coconut falling on their head than any animal attacks."
