does anyone know which BC558 they used? BC558A, BC558B, or a BC558C?

In this fuzz face circuit are BC108 types applied, which are selected on HFE of 260.
That value can be found in the BC548B type HFE range.

Or the MPS3904 (almost the same as 2N3904), that I've read comes in the original.

the reason that i asked is because, since i didn't have any BC558's (which is the first transistor and is a PNP) i tried a 2N2907A but i it just didn't sound right (too peaky and sharp). i then tried an MPS8598 with an hfe of 210 and it sounded really good. i also tried a BC559B with an hfe of 259 and that also sounds great.

Yep... I guess 200 to 400 hfe are in the right values.
