Janglebox, but just the jangle.

Postby seziertisch » 03 Jul 2008, 10:18

I have seen a few discussion of this already, but none that answered my question (at least when the schematic is no longer available):

What is the tone shaping section of the Janglebox? Is it a treble booster or is it just a selection of capacitors wired to a switch (like a bright switch)?

I don't particularly feel the need to invest in a new Dynacomp-style compressor, but related to my first question, I would like to build myself a box just containing the Jangle/tone part of the circuit in a separate box. Or would I be better off just getting a proper treble booster?

The Dynacomp circuit has a pre-emphasis (treble-boost) before the VCA and a de-emphasis after the VCA.
The purpose of this is to reduce the noise.

The janglebox does nothing else to have this two capacitors switchable, resulting in:
1.) treble-boost on
2.) treble-boost and treble-cut on
3.) treble-cut on

thats all, you can modify your Dynacomp to a "Janglebox" by simply adding a 3-position-switch.

So basically what you are saying is that the radical alterations and redevelopment work with the Roger McGuinn compressor as a starting point can be summed up with a three-way toggle switch...

That said, I have only recently been emboldened by a couple of pedal kit builds, and don't feel like going drilling my compressor casing for fear of creating a mess. I would also like to have it separate from the compressor. I have a few friends who would like something like this but would probably be even less keen about a complete amateur going drilling/soldering.

I have a bright switch on one of my amps (which was built for me by someone who I can't readily contact) and that seems to produce a similar enough result with the compressor. So if someone could recommend a couple of capacitors that I could attach to a switch and then box up that would be cool. Or is there some inherent problem with not having it as part of the circuit? Also, I am not so much interested in getting the darker setting of the Janglebox but rather the bright jangle setting.

Thanks again.

I am not so much interested in getting the darker setting of the Janglebox but rather the bright jangle setting.

Then do a search for the 150k resistor at the output of the CA 3080 (or BA 6110) ofyour dynacomp (clone) and simply remove the capacitor which is connected in parallel (typically 1nF) to this resistor and you´ve got it.

Just out of curiosity what would I have to remove at the input section to get the dark mod? Thanks

Wow.... I've just tried that mod on my dynacomp clone and it really brightens up the sound. Dare I say.... it jangles

Thank you for sharing that Analogguru. I've put that cap on a toggle switch now. Excellent!

I cannibalized my dynacomp clone for its jacks and battery clip a while back because i didn't find it a terribly useful pedal.

After reading this i decided to wire it back up and take out that capacitor.

Very simple, and very cool how it changes the sound of the circuit with it out. I may have to rebox this and use it some more.

Thanks for the information!
