Catalinbread - Formula No. 5 [traced]
Hmmm...I just realized something. I have the resistor wired to the top two lugs of the spst switch. That means when the switch is DOWN the 2m2 resistor is in place making it sound like the original trace.
So I'm wondering what is going on when the 2m2 ISN'T in the circuit. I must have screwed up the wiring on the switch or something.

Shiner man i forgot to pull the resistor out, so i can make a comparison. (i'll do that now)
Nocelli wondered wht trannies you used. I used 2 j201's and
2 2n584's. J201's are hotter, so i'm told. The 2n584's are ? I used them cause thats all i had at the time.

I used all 2n584.

Shiner Man, i pulled out the resistor (and my wife yelled at me to turn that crap down!)
Yeah the thing turns into a snotty biotch( the pedal ), It is louder and way more gain. ( i'm gonna put in a switch now)
You might have to double check you're stuff...But look on the bright side you might have just invented a new pedal!
Good luck bro

OK - voltages taken with 2M2 resistor in place, Q1-4 are 2N5457:
Power supply 8.95v -
Q1:
D 4.27
S 0
G 0
Q2:
D 8.94
S 4.27
G 2.97
Q3:
D 4.83
S 0
G 0
Q4:
D 8.94
S 4.84
G 2.97
I kind of suspect the different sound and voltages may just be to do with using different FETs to the specified 2N5457... Since you've socketed them, this would be pretty easy to check. Good luck, and give us a shout if you need anything else.

Okay, dumb question. How is that resistor supposed to be wired to the switch exactly?
I have the resistor on lugs 1 and 2 and the wires on lugs 1 and 3. Shouldn't the wires be on lugs 1 and 2?
And why am I confusing myself with such simple electronics? I think I need a beer.

Your way of wiring it sounds right (wires to 1+3, resistor across 1+2, as per https://www.freestompboxes.org/download/ ... &mode=view) - If the wires were also on 1+2, it would short the resistor and therefore directly connect Q1's drain and source.

er, I mean drain and gate, of course...Nocentelli wrote:Q1's drain and source.

Nocentelli, sorry i typed your name wrong b4, would Shiner man's transistors make a huge difference?

Hi Shiner man, i just did a quick check of your layout, against the vero and it look good, the only thing i can think of is
maybe the pot(s) are different? Sorry i'm just chucking stuff out there.
Good luck bro

Hey shiner man. I just read up through your troubleshooting. You said you have 2n4548's in your build and the build doc says 2n4547's. I believe those two are different and 2n4548's and J201 transistors are the similar interchangable ones. Try grabbing some of those and see if it fixes your problem. They are pretty cheap!
Also looking at your posted picture, I would trim the leads on the bottom down more if you can. I use a pair of flush cutters and I'm able to get all the excess lead off. Helps to prevent any kind of shorting.

I forgot to mention i used 2 2n5484's and 2 j201's and my build sounds like its supposed to, but maybe he should use 4 2n5457's like you suggest.

Which leads do you speak of? The ones on the bottom of the vero or the ones connected to the spdt switch?bigmufffuzzwizz wrote: Also looking at your posted picture, I would trim the leads on the bottom down more if you can.
