If Z got the AC128s "custom made" for him, then why is he using the 404s? The pedals with the 404s looked more recent than the one with the 128s. More BS for sure.... the only thing "custom" was the custom stamp he had made to put his name on the side of the can.

Muzique's prices on transistors are outrageous. Jeesh, they're not even tested. I'm not going to ever pay $14 for a PAIR of transistors that aren't tested. At least the overpriced trannys at Small Bear are tested first!

Hey guys,

I own a fuzz factory and i'm trying to build another.
,
I soldered it all up using igloo's layout (thanks man!) and I'm using some AC128 / 01s (with the big heat sinks) anyway I bought 15 from a guy and some have numbers like 83 and 91 written on them, i'm assuming that that is hfes.

The bottom line is that its not really working nicely like my original, i think i need to swap out some of these transistors and find a good pair.

is the collector defined by the dent? i read that somewhere

what hfe are you guys using successfully in the fuzz factory?

You set up the Ge's as you would a fuzz face, so you need HFEs of ~ 70-85 and 110-140.
Of course it is vital to use low leakage devices and test them.
GEO has the most useful method for this.

i've done some experiments about this and i founded out it work best with a very low Hfe for Q1 e an high value for Q2. so the controll works the best to me and the whole isn't so noisy.

actually i couldn't find AC128 so i used AC157

Attention, what is mostly Q1 and Q2 in a Fuzz Face, is here Q2 and Q3 in most schematics for the Fuzz Factory Q1 being the silicon NPN.

Are you saying the first GE should be higher hfe than the second GE?

the first GE lower and the second higher :wink:

i.e. in mine the first has an Hfe of 25 and the second 130

A good choice to test...or even to build is to use transistors
Mpsa2369a and/or BD139. These silicon transistors have Hfes ranging between 40 and 120 and are reported to sound outstanding as replacements for Ge's in Fuzzface circuits. A very good idea before inserting those precious
germs and debugging.

They are cheap and readily available.

I completed the Fuzz Factory tonight from Igloo's veroboard, which is hereby verified as working. It's a fast and easy build, on a minimal pieces of stripboard. I used my last 2N3904 NPN Si (Hfe 190) + two 2N404A's both Hfe 125)

2N404's picture

That worked alright, apart from RF radio stations at max gain. You have to find the right pot settings before you start switching transitors, as this provides the bias for the GE part of the circuit. Finding a preset was made a lot easier by making notes on the following youtube video:



eg: Fuzz Face =
gate 0
comp 0
drive 6 (=1 o'clock)
stab 10 (=5 o'clock)

Certain end of taper settings don't seem to work if like said earlier Q2 Ge to too high.

Had slightly better results using AC128 hfe 85 + 2N404a hfe 125 for Q2 and Q1. Still not all setting gave sound, but I did succeed to tune the oscillations with each control, so it's pretty much ok



Using OC107 hfe95 or AC126 hfe105 gave me more RF interference, but this might be due to long wires and breadboarded pots.
